Week 03

Distortion and symbols

9/8/26: Distortion

Your first challenge, as well as the file naming activity, are both due at 11:59pm today.

In class, we’re going to chat a little bit about the first challenge and reflect on the reading (and toilet maps) associated with it.

After a speed-run review of projections/distortion, we’ll have three short activies, each practically focused on concepts behind projections and practically incorporating them into your work:

While this is not required, I highly recommend that you read Chapter 6 of Judith Tyner’s Principles of Map Design, which is all about projections.

These aren’t graded, but do note two things for Thursday:

  1. Read Kelly (2023)
  2. Our first lab is assigned today and due next Tuesday

Finally: Geographers in Action will be Wed 9/9! From 5-9pm. If you attend, submit a short write-up on Canvas for extra credit in this class.

9/10/26: Symbols

We’ll talk about Dr. Kelly’s article and I’ll talk about some symbol library resources; then, open lab.

Here are links to some symbol libraries we’ll look at in class:

See here for instructions on adding a .stylx file to an ArcGIS Pro project.
