Step 1

Visit a (map) collection in a library, art collection, etc., for instance:

• Library of Congress (click “Everything” > select “Maps”)
• Boatwright
• David Rumsey Map Collection (can search by text on maps or metadata)
• American Geographical Society Library
• Library of Virginia
• Digital Commonwealth

Search topics that you are interested in, find something that is visually compelling to you.

Step 2

Consider (independently), what do you like about how this object is using colors? then, how does this image use color to…

• Clarify and/or simplify?
• Induce an emotion/reaction?
• Aid perceptibility?
• Lead the eye?
• Translate intellectual hierarchy into visual hierarchy?

We’ll do this for like 5 mins solo, then share w/ each other.
